Chania is best known for its beaches and picturesque Old Town. It is not really a destination people visit specifically for wild nightlife. However, there are several areas where you can enjoy a good night out, and I think most travellers will easily find a favourite place to spend their evenings while they are here.
Below, you’ll find the main areas for nightlife in Chania, what kind of atmosphere each one offers, and who I think they suit best.
1. Chania Old Town & Koum Kapi
If going out at night is one of the things you care about most when you travel, staying in the centre of Chania is probably the best choice. And when I say the city centre, I mainly mean the Old Town and Koum Kapi.
These are the best areas if you want to leave the car behind and walk almost everywhere in the evening.
In the Old Town and Koum Kapi, you can go to a cocktail bar and dance, have a quiet drink in a small bar, or try local wines at a wine bar. You can also spend the evening at a restaurant or traditional taverna with live Greek music, which is a very different kind of night out but one that I think is well worth experiencing while you are in Crete.
What I like most about staying here is that you can move from one place to another on foot. This also makes it easy to go bar-hopping and try several different places in the same night.
Where to stay in Chania Old Town for nightlife
- Domus Renier Boutique Hotel: A great choice if you are looking for a more luxurious stay right on the Venetian Harbour. From here, you can walk to the bars and restaurants around the Old Port in just a few minutes.
- Ciel Collection Suites: A modern and relatively affordable option that I would choose for a couple wanting to stay close to the evening action. You can walk to both Koum Kapi and the Old Town, so there is no need to use the car at night.
- Nobili Boutique Hotel: A stylish boutique stay with beautiful interiors, tucked away on a small street in the Old Town. Just opposite is a small square with Bourbos, one of my favourite local kafeneia in Chania.
2. Nea Chora
Nea Chora does not have nightlife in the usual sense. You will not find a concentration of bars and clubs here, but there are plenty of fish tavernas and restaurants along the seafront. For many people, that is more than enough for a good evening out.
I would say Nea Chora suits families particularly well, as well as travellers who want to spend their evenings somewhere busy and lively without loud music or staying out until the early hours.
In other words, it is a good choice for a more relaxed evening with seafood, meze, ouzo and wine.
Where to stay in Nea Chora for nightlife
- Hilton Chania Old Town Resort & Spa: A brand-new luxury hotel with sea views, located between Nea Chora and the Old Harbour. From here, you can walk to the restaurants of Nea Chora in one direction and to the bars of the Old Town in the other.
- Semeli Studios: A simple, modern and more affordable place to stay in Nea Chora. The seafront is very close, so you can easily walk to the tavernas and restaurants in the evening.
3. Agia Marina & Platanias
Agia Marina and Platanias are two of the largest tourist resorts in the Chania region, and they are located right next to each other. They stretch along a long sandy beach and have dozens of hotels, beach bars, restaurants and clubs.
If you want to spend your days at the beach and have nightlife close to your hotel in the evening, Agia Marina and Platanias are probably the best areas to choose.
The atmosphere here is not limited to the evening either. Some beach bars and clubs also organise parties during the day, so in summer there can be something going on from the afternoon until late at night.
Agia Marina and Platanias are especially popular with younger travellers who want a livelier holiday, but that does not mean they are only suitable for this kind of visitor. There are plenty of restaurants, cafés and quieter places that also work well for couples, families and older travellers.
Where to stay in Agia Marina-Platanias for nightlife
- Evexia Boutique Hotel & Spa – Adults Only: I would mainly recommend this one to couples or groups of friends who want to go out during their holiday. Cabana Mare, one of the best-known clubs in the area, is only a few minutes away on foot.
- Athina Suites Luxury Suites: A more luxurious stay in Platanias, but still close enough to walk to the bars and nightlife of the area in the evening.
4. Paleochora
Paleochora is a seaside town on the south coast of Chania that attracts many visitors during the summer. It is around a 1.5-hour drive from Chania Town, so I would not choose it if you want to go out in Chania every night. However, it is a great option for spending one or two nights away from the city.
There are plenty of places to stay in Paleochora and, as well as several beaches within easy reach.
In the evening, the centre of Paleochora becomes very lively and fills with people. There are also a few bars that are particularly well known for their atmosphere and can get quite busy during the summer.
Where to stay in Paleochora for nightlife
- Pal Beach: A budget-friendly option that works well if you are planning to stay in Paleochora for just one or two nights. It is right by Pachia Ammos Beach and also close to the bars and evening atmosphere of the town.
- Ammos Paleochora Hotel: A better option if you want something a little more comfortable and are planning to stay in Paleochora for more than one or two nights. It is also located by Pachia Ammos Beach and within easy reach of Paleochora’s bars and nightlife.
